Justin Hankins

Hello, my name is Justin Hankins, and I'm a photographer based in Virginia Beach. I travel around the world documenting the happiest moments in people's lives. This is my little photo tumblr to post odds n' ends from my work and other images that inspire me.

Note: Much of the information I post is "reblogged" from other people using the Tumblr publishing system. So please exercise caution when following reblog links -- they may contain content you find objectionable.

Now playing: The Wedding Booth

Wedding photo booths are all the rage these days. They’re a great way to document wedding guests. The main problem with most of them, however, is that they’re often just gimmicky, low-quality setups offered by companies trying to make a quick buck. Usually they fail pretty miserably at creating decent images of your guests. (Which sucks because that’s kinda the whole point, amiright?)

So for the past 5 years or so, I’ve been offering my clients an upscale alternative to their photo booth needs. It’s not technically a “booth” — more of a portable portrait studio, where my assistant spends the night taking high quality, professionally lit images. It’s easily the most popular part of the reception.

In the past, I’ve only offered it to my own wedding couples. This disappointed a lot of folks who wanted to hire it for dates I was already booked. So last week I spun it off into its own separate business. The Wedding Booth is now available for pretty much any event, regardless of my wedding availability.

(Of course, I should’ve named it anything other than the Wedding Booth, since it’s not a booth and it’s not limited to just weddings. But, well, you go with whatever domain name is available these days. And stuff.)

There’s a specific packaging used by publishing houses to ship bundles of magazines, and I want to kiss my mailman whenever he delivers one to my doorstep. Most likely, it means a magazine has featured one of my weddings, and the publishers have shipped me a bunch of copies to try and quench my mom’s insatiable need to hand them out to everyone she knows.

Such was the case today, as I discovered The Knot Magazine featured one of my favourite weddings from last year in their upcoming Spring/Summer 2009 edition. Huzzah! Check out more photos from Lisa and Chris’s wedding in Norfolk, VA, and their engagement session up in Brooklyn, NY.

And for god’s sake, please get engaged already so I can photograph your wedding. (Yes, I’m talking to you.)

Here’s another post that was hiding in the drafts folder:

Love It or Leave It? Disney-Inspired Engagement Rings

Some girls never let go of their wish to be princesses, and thanks to designer Kristie Kelly, they don’t have to. The Kirstie Kelly for Disney by Mouwad collection, shown at Bridal Week in New York, features six engagement rings and wedding bands that pay homage to Disney’s leading princesses.

The engagement rings, named after Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Cinderella, Jasmine, Ariel, and Belle are supposed to be “subtle references to the personalities of each princess.” For example, the baguettes and clean lines of the Ariel ring are supposed to reference the bold style of art deco and Ariel’s “bold individuality.”

Say what you will, these are much nicer than a lot what’s out there. Were I a gal, I’d happily wear the Sleeping Beauty (bonus if it’s on the Belle band). Then again, I’d be happy with a ring tattoo, so wtf do I know.

Jon & I are looking at Etsy to be the source of our save the dates and invites.  While there are tons of gorgeous StD’s (that’s an unfortunate acronym!) and invites available through paperies and small print companies, they can run very expensive.  Your guests may marvel over your chosen wedding stationery, but eventually they’ll be thrown away.  Check out the cute and creative stationery that the Etsy vendors have to offer (and at great prices) - if they’re good enough for Martha, they’re good enough for me! “A couple get their wedding portraits done at a special field warfare scenario photography set on July 29, 2009 in Nanjing of Jiangsu Province, China. The husband and wife to be are both military enthusiasts. Specially-themed wedding portraits are popular among Chinese young couples.” (thx brad)

I need to find a couple like this!

One of my favourite images from Erin & Manning’s St. Lucia wedding along Rodney Bay. (Yes, my job makes me happy like a little girl.)
